Principal Engineer

About the Role:

At Fideo, we’re leading the charge in the fight against fraud by turning data into actionable insights. As a Principal Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of building systems that detect and disrupt fraudulent activity in real-time, protecting individuals and organizations alike. This isn’t just about code—it’s about creating solutions that make a tangible impact on people’s lives.

In this role, you’ll design and implement highly scalable, performant systems capable of processing billions of records across diverse data sources—from AdTech and MarTech to dark web signals. You’ll collaborate with a small, highly skilled team to build the foundation of Fideo’s platform, driving innovation in areas like real-time data processing, microservices architecture, and API development.

You’ll work closely with our Product and Data teams, tackling complex technical challenges while delivering features that bring immediate value to our customers. Whether it’s optimizing batch data ingestion, scaling high-throughput APIs, or debugging distributed systems, you’ll own the toughest problems and see them through from end to end.

As a senior technical leader, you’ll also play a key role in setting engineering standards, exploring new technologies, and shaping the future of Fideo’s platform and culture.

Ideal Candidate:

Our ideal candidate has an insatiable curiosity about the world, always seeking to understand how things work and why problems arise. When faced with a problem, they know how to navigate ambiguity and identify the right paths to resolve it. They combine an eye for detail with the ability to quickly build and test solutions, turning ideas into actionable insights to validate or disprove concepts.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Write high-quality, well-tested code to support data ingestion, delivery, and foundational systems.
  • Build and evolve batch data ingestion pipelines and microservices, integrating identity fragments into our Identity Graph and real-time Signals data collection.
  • Seamlessly blend batch and API-based data sets to ensure consistent data integrity across all sources.
  • Develop and maintain microservices that can scale to handle thousands of requests per second.
  • Take ownership of problems from end to end, creating functional solutions that address real needs.
  • Embrace a DevOps-first mindset to manage and self-serve infrastructure changes as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management to flesh out, document, and develop impactful features.
  • Lead innovation in processes and technologies to improve the efficiency, quality, and speed of both our systems and our team.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, ensuring high availability for key systems.
  • Mentor and support teammates, fostering technical growth within the team.
  • Support Sales in closing deals by contributing a strong technical voice to customer conversations.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years in engineering, with a focus on high-throughput microservice architectures.
  • Expertise in building and scaling microservices using Java, Scala, Python, or GoLang API frameworks (we use Dropwizard, Quarkus, and FastAPI).
  • Strong experience with large-scale and NoSQL databases (e.g., ClickHouse, Scylla, Cassandra).
  • Proficient in traditional RDBMS and SQL systems (e.g., MySQL, Postgres, Aurora, Athena).
  • Skilled in scaling and debugging complex microservice systems.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud platforms (especially AWS) and experience deploying cloud-based services.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes, and ECS.
  • Experienced in cloud configuration and deployment templates (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Comfortable with Linux/Unix and command-line scripting.
  • Familiar with observability tools like PagerDuty, Graphite, and Grafana.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to create clear, concise documentation, diagrams, and presentations.
  • Strong architectural skills, with experience designing robust systems.
  • Proficiency in data architecture and efficient data formats like Parquet and Avro.
  • Hands-on experience with AirFlow, Spark, and Scala.

Nice to Haves:

  • Background in fintech or fraud prevention.
  • Experience in Identity Resolution.
  • Algorithms expertise or a strong mathematical background.
